Jiayin Shi, lyric baritone, is known for his versatility of singing and compelling stage presence. Jiayin has recently garnered attention for his performances in contemporary opera. Notable roles include the leading role of Joseph De Rocher in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking at Miami Music Festival 2024, for which Heggie, a two-time Grammy Award nominee, praised him as “Wonderful singing. Powerful performance.” Jiayin also portrayed DAD in the world premiere of Emily Koh’s opera Her|alive.un.dead, earning acclaim from The Boston Music Intelligencer for his "versatile baritone" voice, and from The Art Fuse for his “vivid portrayal” of the role.
In addition to contemporary works, Jiayin also excels in his demonstration of roles in traditional operas. Recent highlights include performing the title role Aeneas in a cinematic production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, for being nominated in the 2023 OPERA America Awards for Digital Excellence in Opera.
As an active performer and opera singer, Jiayin Shi’s performances include opera, oratorio, musical theater, and art songs. Besides his performing career, Jiayin Shi is working on his doctoral degree in the School of Music of the College of Fine Arts of Boston University. He also holds a master degree from Cleveland Institute of Music and a bachelor degree from China Conservatory of Music.
